With the Ottawa Senators in a rebuilding mode and trading away players like Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly, Jarkko Ruutu, Alex Kovalev and Brian Elliott in recent weeks, the trade deadline spotlight has been shining brightly on pending UFA Chris Phillips.

Phillips made it clear he wanted to remain in Ottawa, the only NHL team he has ever played for, and GM Bryan Murray was interested in keeping the veteran blue-liner - if the price was right. Last night, a compromise was reached and Phillips will remain in Ottawa for three more years. His veteran leadership will be a valuable asset as he mentors the young defenceman coming up in the organization.
